The most important thing is the knowledge and experience and if they aren't NARPM credentialed (for single family) or IREM (for large multi-fam) you're dealing with a rookie (in my opinion). 

I have worked in this industry for 5 years now and look forward to being able to using my knowledge of how to manage properties and add value in my own personal portfolio as it grows. 

Uneducated realtors that lack investment knowledge, your chances of success diminish.

This "Face-To-Face" knowledge and interaction becomes important, if any "sticky" issues develop during the transaction.

There are many great company's and loan officers, but finding the right combination of products, experience, knowledge and willingness to work in that side of the business can be difficult to nail down at times.

I need to develop my knowledge base, learn how to evaluate deals and make quality offers.

Yes, most have no idea how investments for fix/flips work, but there are a rare bunch similar to myself who not only have the knowledge but the will power to make these type of deals happen.

I am trying to soak up as much information on real estate investing so that I can hit the ground running when I land back stateside.What books/podcasts/articles/other resources would you guys recommend so that I can widen my knowledge of real estate investing and give myself the best opportunity for success?

If you knock out all of them you will have gained a ton of knowledge to get you ready to start investing.
