LOTS more to real estate than just being a collector of doors that make you 200.oo a month.. nothing wrong with it.. its the easiest for folks to understand and the easiest to finance. 

Also, my real estate career first started booming out of state (Nevada, specifically) so keep in mind that you don't have to be married to the area you live in to benefit from real estate investing.

Here in Central Florida there is a building boom.

There are better parts (especially bordering White Oak), and a few pockets that are very well maintained, holdovers from McKeesport's heyday when the steel mills boomed, but the good areas are definitely the exception now.I have a close family friend with about 20 units in McKeesport who has done okay there, but definitely has to deal with the issues that come with lower-income renters.
