Much of the Westside and beach communities are pricey but the amenities are pretty awesome, and the schools tend to be better too.  

Near the beach, 45 minutes to Santa Maria, probably 35-40 minutes to Vandenberg, 25 minutes to Buellton.Hope at least some of this helps.Eric

You can do the math, but make sure you think through and have a solid plan before you quit your day job to go sit in the beach sipping fruity drinks and map out your plan to get rich investing in real estate if you don't have a LOT of money to invest.

I went to one in Manhattan Beach- very helpful, no sales pitch and it only cost $20 to get in. 

Orange County has a great airport, hotels, amusements, beaches, ;)
