You CANNOT underestimate the importance of the mls, as well as being on the various websites that being on the mls also gets you on to like realtor.com, etc that most buyers do their searching on these days.To me, the value where a realtor comes in is in whatever value you get out of him/her as far as things like correctly pricing your home goes, etc.

While I agree that open houses aren't necessary (and potentially dangerous as no control over who walks in), I would avoid any agent who hasn't returned your call in over a week (or 24 hours, for that matter).
