The dp is a bit steep, but the interest rates in Canada are way lower... and getting a mortgage in Canada is a dream compared to the US.

$260k/y income is more than most of can dream about.

Current homeowners could very well see their home’s value plummet and their equity evaporate if tax reform nullifies or eliminates the tax incentives they depend upon, while prospective homebuyers will see that dream pushed further out of reach.

Would my small down payment and "sweat equity" be worth 50%, or am i just dreaming?
