As for the change over between two heat sources you can install a temp sensor to restrict when the back up can turn on, a good low voltage electrician can figure it out for you.

The nail should also not be in super tight against the siding to restrict movement, (it is hung not fastened) If it doesn't have room to expand it will buckle and warp in the heat and once it does it will never go back to normal.

This is definitely more costly than tearing down and parking an airstream in place, you are exempt from lot-line setbacks and other restrictions that would exist if you were to try and build something from scratch.
