As far as a permanent fix, I guess it all depends on your standards for aesthetics vs cost. on the cheaper end of the spectrum would be getting a piece of hardboard and cutting it to size, installing it, and painting over it. otherwise as you mentioned maybe some vinyl or wood. 

Make it as aesthetically pleasing as possible (clean it up, paint etc) and then sell it as a value add project for someone else.

It may be a high quality car but the visual aesthetics may simply not be as appealing to some.
