I do think computational/quantitative finance and has something to do with it, but two other factors would probably be more pertinent in their increased application.First the golden age of objective "straight" math seems to have passed (at least for now), we can all think of great mathematical achievements, not many of which have come in the last 40 years.secondly, this is also is due to big data and ubiquitous data availability.

For most people, buying real estate (at least in the beginning), means penny-pinching for long periods of time in order to acquire the capital needed for the investment.It could be months or even years of frugal living to achieve a goal, focusing on "needs" rather than "wants".But even the most dedicated need a treat every now and again to break the monotony of what I call "the grind", in order to recharge the batteries and stay motivated.So, do you guys (and gals) treat yourself?

It's hard to describe the feeling you get the first month, but it pretty much borders on 'awesome'.)While this strategy won't get you the house immediately, it would at least put you on better financial footing towards achieving that goal.
