Reading the replies to Luke's post asking folks which booking platform they prefer, I wonder about the lack of protection when guests book directly.

We had a cleaning crew just today elect not to show up, causing us to have to move the guests to another cabin.  

One of them is Imputed Interest, which in today's rate environment and the size of deals that the podcast guest is talking about isn't a ton of money, but it also opens up a conversation about the ethics of getting a zero interest loan. 

You can self-manage with most of them, though unless you live in the area or have a lot of experience with hosting short-term guests I would recommend hiring a property manager. 

How well yours would do depends on so many factors; type of build, A frames are always popular among guests, size, occupancy, will you allow pets, what other amenities, how much are you paying when taking into consideration above, etc.
