I always keep a few little things I can easily work on while waiting so I can get them done and have a productive night even if they don't show up.The next kinda-busiest time (getting phone calls) for me is spring/fall when that first hot/cold weather hits and people call about their air conditioner or furnace.

Builder profit is typically going to be 8% - 10% for a smaller custom builder, for a larger production builder, it may be 10%+.

I got out after 6 as an E-6 because I wanted a change in lifestyle, but looking back I should have taken the 90k re-up bonus, stuck it out for 4 more years and invested that money in something productive!

I would say look around for some good info products on doing the direct mail yourself - my service is beyond the scope of your monthly budget (thus this is not a solicitation, mods :-) ).

This creates a terrific looking product with nice hardware that isn't too high end, and certainly not low end.We have tried IKEA cabinets too and some of their product looks terrific. 

This is a case where jumping on the lead as soon as you get it is not the most productive way.

The guru job is to up-sell you his products, that is how he makes money.
