I've messaged one of the group organizers in my area and let him know that I was interested in attending one of his meetings.

Objections to the word crowdfunding should be directed at those that are roadblocks to the laws being implemented as intended by Congress.  

Maybe revisit your criteria for objective measures to protect you in the future.

Fortunately being able to raise and organize the money is the great equalizer and these people just end up wasting everyone's time trying to do nonsense like this.
