It can also help in narrowing down specific neighborhoods that work well for what you're trying to do. for me, I've bought properties without ever physically going there and seeing the house I bought, but I've always at some point prior to the purchase took a trip out to investigate the area.

I have not heard of the bank actually physically checking in person to see if you're using the property as your primary residence but no doubt they are looking at things like mailing addresses for tax bills, water bills, etc.
