My goal is to start with a solid foundation, and I would prefer to hold this property for the long term, making enhancements as needed.This property is in an area with many homes built around 1900.

Make a solid plan of what you are trying to achieve, that you both agree on, and save like crazy so you have the finances to make it happen.

Thanks everyone for your comments, it's nice seeing the different perspectives you all have.Sounds like I've got a few options to look at, including turn-key offerings, some potentially solid cities in my province, as well as some up and coming cities in the US.
