Pex was a savior for water lines but the cast iron waste stack & drains as well as the cast iron vents required walls to be entered to be replaced &/or hooked up with PVC,As each apartment vacated I would upgrade before the next tenant(s) moved in.

The iron content is at it's limit, and you'll get red stains on anything where water sits as it oxidizes with exposure to air but a water softener will take care of that.

Especially important are the old cast-iron pipes that were used up until the 1960s, they are all failing now and expensive to replace (~$10k).
