Pex was a savior for water lines but the cast iron waste stack & drains as well as the cast iron vents required walls to be entered to be replaced &/or hooked up with PVC,As each apartment vacated I would upgrade before the next tenant(s) moved in.

The iron content is at it's limit, and you'll get red stains on anything where water sits as it oxidizes with exposure to air but a water softener will take care of that.

I'm actually working on my first buyer deal at the moment and ironically it's a purchase for my family and I to move in.

Hello, I have an old house (built in 1900s) and a weeks ago, there are 3+ leaking spots in my cast iron sewer pipes in the basement.

@Mike Brown - Tenant improvements are negotiable and that is ironed out during lease negotiations.

So ask that question before you book the inspection.Things to look for are 1) Sewer - is it an old cast iron?

I would pay more for a place with pictures and I am a life-long builder who has bunked with some bad boys, Doesn't matter, we all want comfy beds, beer and a BBQ.

BBQ while looking at the water, fish from our backyard etc. 

Especially important are the old cast-iron pipes that were used up until the 1960s, they are all failing now and expensive to replace (~$10k).

All are very good points but the truth is the bbq and the beer. : )
