I get the cool factor but they are significantly more expensive than traditional deadbolts and cost of re-keying a lock is so small I feel it'll take ages to recover the cost of replacement.

I have successfully done this before to accommodate a change in a tenant's budgetary situation.If they aren't cool with that, you have a couple options:1) Hit them with the late fee until they change their minds.
