I don’t understand why landlords want to use these simple money transfer apps when there are numerous free to use apps specifically intended and designed for rent collection.

It's tedious because those systems aren't designed for that, and calendars aren't always accurate (and don't show any history of booked days), but it's the best you're going to get at this point, I think - unless you can get an owner to talk to you!
