Every time I'm there, I change the filter in the furnace, test the smoke detectors, test the CO detector, test the sump pump, and look under the sinks, around the water heater, and around the water meter (in the basement) for leaks.

The key here when considering any kind of HVAC system is to 1) Properly size the system based on a comprehensive Manual J calculation and (if feasible) a blower-door test, 2) Air seal as best you can (lots of ways to go about this, check out AeroBarrier), 3) Insulate as best as possible (but air sealing is much more important).
