If the sewer line is higher than the lowest pipes (that will be the pipe draining the basement toilet most likely), then you will have to get a pump system to eject the basement drain waste.

If the distance or height is different, you'll have to do more work - shorten the pipes between the union and the water heater if the new heater is taller, lengthen them if the new heater is shorter, or remove the other half of the union and install a flexible pipe (see below).Sometimes, instead of unions, there are flexible pipes from the rigid pipe to the water heater - either copper tubing (thinner than normal copper pipe, so you can bend it a little), or flexible hoses, sort of like what you hook up a toilet or sink with.

and all kinds of kitchen waste crap was spilling into the common wall.Several times the toilet won't flush, and it's in the main drain, I went to investigate and have it snaked from the common roof stack to clear the blockage.Roach infestation issues (most likely caused by the broken DW drain hose spilling food waste into the wall) happened along that common wall, I went over and did pest control.I can go on and on and on.Whenever there is an issue, it's always up to me to handle, because he would ignore the issue, or simply tell his tenant he is "out of town at the moment."
