Buying a bigger unit than you have the means for (5%) means you also don’t have the cash reserves for the capital expenditures.

I recently found the Bigger Pockets world after reading Brandon's book "The Book on Rental Property Investing" and have been hooked on real estate investing ever since! 

Hi Everyone, I'm been hanging around Bigger Pockets off and on for awhile.

The poor are replacing the ones leaving thus putting bigger tax burden on the rich and middle class.

And here I thought I understood the whole "Bigger Pockets" metaphor.

Do you buy a single family home, invest in a syndication on something bigger or find additional money to invest in a small to medium multifamily unit?

Now, at face value it would seem that having a paid off house and bigger cashflow is desirable, but it misses a LOT of depth on the overall picture. for instance, I have a mortgage on the property I posted for 100% of my invested funds, meaning I have no money in the deal.
