We have set our rules/requirements high as well to limit the amount of tenants that are not qualified, either financial or background check.

When I rented my first place in Arizona, I merely told my landlord what I did for a living, and he didn't even do a background check on me. 3 years later, having never missed a rent payment, and leaving the apartment in fantastic condition, he sent me my security deposit back in full along with a letter of thanks for being a great tenant.
