Ask around with other investors and "investor friendly" real estate agents for references and then have a chat with each inspector to see exactly what s/he covers in the thorough building inspection.Check with the zoning and heritage bi-laws to see what restrictive covenants will govern how you can renovate and maintain the house.

@Lyndsey Whiteaker, If your intent is primarily to resell (flip) you'll actually pay ordinary income tax state and federal which will probably include Self employment tax and the Affordable Health Care Act premium depending on your entity structure.

For purchase prices and average rents you might find this site useful: idealista.comThere are some tax deductions and government subsidies for rentals, recently they started a tax break if you rent to people 18-30 yrs, there are others but I'm not an expert on Spanish taxes...

Also, if assets don't cover amount due(I doubt that in this case, but I have no idea) will the government just take possession of said property and if so, how is it sold?
