It’s an appreciating asset that I’m not counting on cash flow from  I have to say I flinched twice here and when I read your initial post.Personally, I went in the opposite direction and purchased the cheapest primary possible and didn't buy toys and luxuries until much later.

Amazing as this sounds it could be as simple as clogged gutters .The sump pump is the last line of defense not the first .Sump placement is very important,with that age there is good chance of no drain  around the foundations .Funny story last house Iived in flooded when I was selling it had to cancel he open house .Installed a sump pump after hauling 12 yards of dirt,gutter work over .
