Some quick searches seem to indicate that the market in Oahu is somewhat unique (rules limiting short term rentals, lots of leaseholds, etc.).  

Everyone's personal preference is unique but as Thomas S. mentioned, I would never pay off a mortgage.  

And the HOA is another fee you could've avoided or minimized by selecting a different property.

In the beginning, do not do anything unique.  

I have been researching for months about how to select a 401K plan but in all honesty I don't really understand how to best choose a plan.
