It has its limitations, in that their Housing Price Index is based on the movement of single-family properties with mortgages purchased by Fannie & Freddie Mac, but it does go back to 1975 (where available), by Zip Codes (scroll down on the above link till you see "Five-Digit ZIP Codes" and download the Excel file.

If you are not willing to get a license so you can directly access the MLS, I'd advise you to do the following: 1) create your investment parameters and be specific in what you want (3bd/2ba, 1985 or newer, priced under $200K, specific zip codes/neighborhoods (check Citydata.com for details about the zip codes you are targeting), School ratings 7+, etc)2) connect with 1-2 agents who serve different areas you're interested in and have them put in these parameters so the minute it hits the MLS, you will receive an automatic email alert3)Prior to contacting agents, be prepared to show them you have an ability to do the deals and make offers by having some form of financing lined up (traditional bank or private money, proof of funds, good credit, etc.
