You can ask for free what you will need at your city/county permit department.

That is when they start to call inspectors, health department, lawyers, etc...

My local building department is extremely willing to work with homeowners, and I brought it up to current code and all was good. 

We have a great relationship with Annie Mac and they really know what they're doing in the 203k department.
