If you were a sketchy person-- maybe on drugs, alcohol, with mental instability, or with other issues-- and suddenly you get to live rent free for months, would you pay? 

The nice thing about debt payoff, in addition to the mental relief, is that it provides a guarenteed ROI in the amount of the interest attached to the debt.

While you may not conciously see it as a problem, this is likely a mental drain that is costing you. 

There are mental blocks to get over and challenges to face that you've never experienced.

I would prioritize finding an accountant who specializes in real estate taxation over one that is local.There are 20+ accountants on this message board who specialize in real estate taxation.

I do rent to own on single family homes so I'm dealing with buyer-mentality rather than renter-mentality.
