So I saw a lot of nice looking fridges for ~$1700-1800 that (it says here) retail for over $3k.

This gave us a better kitchen layout and a more natural space to put the fridge and extra cabinets.Outside we installed two new driveways and a walkway that improved the water drainage and added safety to the front porch access.

They had the power turned off and left a ton of food in the fridge.

These houses will have 2 washers, 2 dryers, 2 fridges, plus entertainment like a streaming Blu Ray player, HDTV, kegorator, fire ring with fire wood outside, ping pong, darts, exercise equipment and free weights, etc. 

The best you can do is spend more money to update and decorate to higher levels, but you won't get a whole lot more rent just because you have a sexy shower, hood vent, or a new fridge.

For what its worth, we had Frigidaire Pro series for our fridge, stove, microwave, and dishwasher that we bought 6 years ago.  

It's not too difficult for a college student to move (i.e. limited amount of possessions)-To counter what @James Wise posted above, many students will have the expectation that you'll be providing the appliances - dishwasher, fridge, oven, and possibly washer/dryer-Some landlords find it easier to rent by the room, others do one master lease.
