We dug a trench next to the foundation, put sheet metal along the wall (but I suppose you could use thick plastic sheets), and laid river rock and gravel in the trench and filled er' back up.

I'd consider xeriscaping by putting down river rocks, crushed gravel, or decomposed granite for a portion of the landscaping, as rocks are a lot easier to maintain than grass.
