If you are paying Joe hourly and there is no contract there is a chance you will be paying what Workers Comp would pay Joe (in CT that is approx. 60% of lost wages and all the medical bills).

More jobs, businesses, better travel connections (for example, we have 3 airports in the tri-county area, which have more frequent variety of flights all over the world), history, we are more sexy (at least in Miami, which tends to be more in the news / public eye) than West Coast, logistics, medical and other industries thrive (and, therefore, hire) here more than on the West Coast.

There are alternatives like short-term medical plans (pre-ACA), faith-based sharing arrangements (premiums are not deductible as it's not insurance), or catastrophic plans that will cost less and maybe that's the way to go instead of trying to save and invest through an HSA - it just depends.
