For many the fear of dealing with tenants never goes away and as such they will put up with bad tenant behaviour, rents below market and numerous other issues simply so they do not have to actually manage the business. 

One of my proposed  electrical contractors found numerous code violations....costly code violations!

I also know of more than one occasion where scum spent the night in their space, torched through the walls from one unit to the next, cherry picking numerous spaces.

No doubt parts of it are very rough, and yes it's revival has been attempted and failed numerous times.

Cops have been called numerous times and they have been asked to leave several times.

I think that starting a part time job (in conjunction with being a waiter) at a property management company would provide numerous benefits and help propel your career, no matter what the wages may be. 

They're at a point in their life where they're in a pinch due to a life-changing experience, numerous bad decisions etc.
