When you call to verify her income, you could ask what the practice is on background checks for international employees. 

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense for them, so practical answer is you probably lose your deposit.

It could also be because I live in Pennsylvania and there may be in a difference state laws and or banking practices.

Other than the crazy idea of having the seller pay for the buyer's closing costs, there is another common practice called early possession, which basically means that the buyer moves into the house while under contract and before closing.
