Since you're guessing four years here, I'd say stay one more year and qualify for the whole thing if getting some tax-free cash is your goal.

For instance, if you had a home in a nice subdivision with a 1-2 bedroom finished basement with kitchen, could you stay in the basement full-time (I'm a single bachelor) and then Air BnB out the entire top of the home?  

My current Multi does not have a shed or garage which makes staying organized with yard equipment ect. not easy.
