I will play Devil's Advocate and disagree with Jacob on the payment issue -- if your mentor is a busy person (as most successful investors are), time is money, and outsourcing smaller tasks for pay is a good business decision.

You can agree or disagree with the acquisition, but the thinking of how to get a deal done instead if the reasons it can't be is a good lesson for me.

I don't necessarily have the experience to disagree with you here however this game is very dynamic.
