If you weren't changing the washing machine, I would say don't bother, but if you're already buying the washer, you're going to disconnect the hose anyway to install the new one, so just go ahead and replace them.

It's not something simple like installing a ceiling fan like a handyman does.

To actually update it, you would have to take it out and put in sheetrock.If you want sheetrock you can install it directly over the wood paneling.  1/4" thick sheetrock is available, which could probably be installed with construction adhesive to minimize the finishing work.

You could have the exact same asset installed two different ways and one way it would qualify as 5 year and the other it'd be long life. 

Installing a French drain with pump  is also not a big deal .
