What a weird fn amendment, does the landlord know he signed such a thing? 

Unfortunately it happens though.After the separation, you will need to amend the leases so payment goes to you/your son.

@Connor BauseThe International Residential Code requires one exit from each unit in a duplex unless it has been amended by state or local requirements.  

So if the original contract does not mention an inspection period, you'll have to accept it as written unless an amendment is signed. 

Two consenting adults are agreeing to make an amendment to their business relationship.

So while you recieve the benefit from them over the course of 27.5 years, you do still receive the benefit from them.You'll want to amend your tax return to capture these holding costs correctly.
