I'm trying to figure out if the period ends Saturday, next Tuesday, or some other day, being that it will encompass a weekend, Independence Day (Saturday), and Independence Day observed (Friday).

I decided not to do the deal due to some permitting aspects that would involve dealing with the city of Chicago and potentially tearing down the work of the previous owner (he started doing a lot of work with no permits and it wasn't to code).

I've heard stories of people losing EMD because they were not expecting replies over the weekend etc, no way to get around the waiting aspect...

That aspect is not going to change for any HOA properties acquired before October, but it's the smaller issues that are still being worked out. 

I also see this attitude of "this is how it is, nothing we can do about it" in many aspects of society that lead to worse and worse terms for consumers or "little guys".
