Looking to buy and hold/rent  I would pick a place you want to live, and then get into real estate in that location. 

I will "house hack" a duplex at my next assignment location. 

You can also use the search feature to locate ones advertised in the past to give you an idea of schedule.

Location is prime but it is overall a very industrial area and not a desirable one in terms of current housing.

@Michael Ablan Sounds like you may be buying in the "rust belt"  Is that where the properties are located?
