However, I have a very strong feeling that Annapolis would be a great place to have a full time Airbnb rental, as three out of the four seasons there is always something going on and there never seem to be enough hotel rooms available. 

Does anybody have any experience on buying a condo within a hotel like the Ritz or the Four Seasons and then rented it successfully on Airbnb?

An airline ticket and hotel area cheap compared to a bad deal.You need to identify the types of neighborhoods you are willing to invest in.

There is a charm to speaking to the actual owner, makes it more personal, like renting an actual Home and not a hotel room.

You can list your room on airbnb website at a certain price and people on a short (or long) visit to the city can stay at your house, instead of living in a hotel.
