Yes, radiation causes cancer, but nobody really knows exactly how much exposure is too much, so they set the "actionable limits" for radon pretty low.

Having some oil filled electric radiators , or those ceramic heaters can be a building saver . ( One of those small ceramic heaters keeps my RV 72 degrees in 30 degree weather)

Contaminated soil, lead based paint is still used commercially, just not residentially, high levels of radiation, mold, asbestos.
