I have a similar goal of living in Europe, at least for part of the year, however I'm afraid I'd have to be a lot more hands off with my real estate investments.

If you do this you'll have a huge pile of money that will allow you to pursue whatever strategy you want very quickly.If I had to do it all over again, I would buy a personal residence as soon as I could, probably house hack, then buy a new personal residence as soon as I had the money for another down payment then turning the old house into a long term rental.If you're just starting I'd also recommend listening to the Bigger Pockets and Real Estate Rookie Podcasts.

I'd recommend you get a qualified electrician out to take a look at it.  

It's not exactly a windfall, but it's a start.My dad's medical bills are piling up faster than I'd like, and I'm feeling the financial strain.

However, I'd like to see some income showing that they can pay for utilities, and regular living expenses. 

If it were a cash transaction I'd suggest joint tenants with you holding a 1st position lien for the proceeds you injected into the deal.

Add on regular amortization and I’d have right around 15% equity after 3 years.
