There are all sorts of mentalities out there around blue chips markets being tried and true/over saturated, etc.If it were me, I would research which markets had the best potential based on your budget and proximity, then start reaching out for STR specific realtor contacts in those markets in this forum

Here in the Bay Area that is more challenging with just one property.....unless you are willing to buy a triplex or fourplex in a "up and coming, blue collar, working class neighborhood".   

Even "easy" sometimes.Then, out of the blue something happens. 

Find decent blue  collar working areas B and C areas.

The days of a REIA are numbered, sadly though, people think they are the key to the guru who has the magic Blue or Red pill to ail their thirst for real estate knowledge.

I would never touch Chicago personally, but I tend to avoid blue states when buying investments.
