If you had a $500,000 limit on your home and the judgement agaist you in a covered claim was $750,000, then $500,000 would be paid by the Homeowners and the Umbrella would pay $250,000.Which policy you would get would depend on the underlying policies you wanted to cover over.

Without passing judgements, a lot of people that are in this scenario, end up trying to live as long as they can (for free) in their home (knowing full well they will be foreclosed on).

The problem is a lot of people make poor judgement calls, make cheap repairs (whenever they get around to doing it), are not compliant with their town (COs, fire safety, rental registrations, etc).
