It serves two purposes, it allows for a water proof cover for the joint & gives you a better caulked finish for the shower door frame.I also always add a 2x4 behind the joint to ensure a good solid screw anchor for the shower door framing.Tough to see but it blends in nicely & the PVC wraps around the corner on this one.

@Kevin MosierOne thing I've learned about water in basements is that more often than not it's due to improper spouting on the exterior of the house and/or sloping of the ground towards the house.
