The 1% is supposed to be just a rule of thumb indicator- but it's usually a very poor indicator of cash flow in realistic situations.

@Shiloh Lundahl, can't say for sure.  10.8% is before fees supposedly, but if you're in a low-cost index fund like Vanguard then the fees should be only a tiny fraction of a percent.
