I find it smart to be cautious but debilitating to be scared.

Personally, I'm a worrier but instead of letting that debilitate me, it has always spurred me to furiously cover all my bases a thousand times over, even as a child.

Ability to pay does not mean that doing so won't be debilitating to the borrower.

Once you get comfortable doing deals and have enough confidence in your ability to make your own money and control your own destiny it becomes a no brainer to ditch the debilitating JOB.
