Being the first time, I expected more growing pains than this.

I thought maybe a floor scraper would work but I think that may stand a better chance of breaking the staple and leave a sharp bit sticking out of the existing floor causing more trouble down the road. 

With a sharp utility knife they can be cut to the size of the rooms.

You recover but it is painful.
