I'm with @Colleen F. on flooring colors, I have dark mahogany floors in my 1910 house and it shows EVERYTHING; that modern greyish-brownish mix or old oak with lots of grain is better at hiding dirt.

While I can see that much appreciation has taken place, and many investors have made a lot of money, I don't know if there's room for the average buy and hold investor like me anymore in the area.I know many areas are developing high tech centers, such as Pittsburgh, etc., but is that enough for RE to be profitable right now?

That street in Particular has a mix of both some very nice properties and some that need work. 

Personally, I like a mix of paper assets, real estate and business. 

Austin price wise and economy wise is very much like Raleigh (lots of tech), where I live now but it makes it very expensive.
