College Senior Intrigued By Rental Investing Boston, MA Austin TX

Zach Talke
Posted

Hi guys! I'm a rising senior at Boston College interested in buy and hold real estate investing. I've started reading books on real estate investing this summer and stumbled upon the Bigger Pockets podcast where I've listened through a little over the first 20 episodes so far.

I would say the main takeaway I am looking for from Bigger Pockets is to see if long term rental investing is something viable for someone in my stage in life. While I will be graduating college debt free, I will be doing so with little money. So the big question in my mind is "Are there opportunities for someone like me with time, flexibility, and an eagerness to learn, but no capital, to partner with and learn from someone who has been in the field and has capital but is maybe looking to take a more passive role and spend his time elsewhere?"

In regards to markets I am interested in, I've enjoyed living in Boston, MA and could see myself living there when I graduate. Austin, TX has caught my eye too for the past couple years as a really cool place to move to and I've been seriously considering that. Being young, I would say I'm open to moving to most places however, if opportunities present themselves there.

I'm excited to be joining the Bigger Pockets community and look forward to learning from and having the opportunity to connect with you all!

@Zach Talke If you're considering both Boston, MA and Austin, TX, I'm going to take a wild guess and say weather doesn't matter all that much to you - or maybe you haven't thought that part through.

I'm Boston born and have lived in eastern MA all of my life.  I cannot tolerate the heat very well.  I'd last about 48 hours in Austin summers.

I'd guess that most people in Austin would last through one Boston winter nor'easter and hightail it right back to TX.  Horizontal snow and sleet delivered with gale force winds will do that to you.

If it were me, that would be my first consideration.  Quality of life and all that.
