Seems they had put a deposit down on a rental, showed up with a U-Haul and found the person claiming to rent it was a scammer.

Take your 500K, spend less on your residence (i.e $350k for a condo in Port Moody) and buy in a market where the other $150k can be put to good use as a rental.
