Adding 45 degree angled gusset supports 1', 2', or 3' (whatever doesn't protrude too much) out horizontally will stiffen it up. 

The only other item I'll add is that if you buy in an appreciating market maybe in a few years (4-5 years) the property value will increase enough to pull out equity in a refinance.

It's also an area I can get to for projects within a 30-45 time frame, which is also important to me.
